Fabrics: The all-time Classics with a focus on respect towards nature

Fabrics Spring.Summer 23 #4

15. March 2022

Although MUNICH FABRIC START and BLUEZONE couldn’t be realised physically in the end of January, we want to give our beloved exhibitors and long-term partners the chance to present their collections for Spring.Summer 23 online. We are presenting the most inspiring developments, prints and innovations in all our areas: FABRICS, ADDITIONALS, BLUEZONE, DESIGN STUDIOS, SOURCING & KEYHOUSE.

These timeless, and both powerful and simple collections present the all-time classics with a focus on respect towards nature and environment. Fabrics’ specialists BORGHI 1819, Ipekis I Lane Bugella, Lanificio Roma, Pontex, Seidra Textilwerke and Yünsa Yünlu show their latest developments.

BORGHI 1819

Borghi 1819, part of the TBM Group, is a 100% Italian Textile Company, specialized in cotton and linen. Dedicated to the luxury market, Borghi 1819 proposes a SS23 collection unique for variety and completeness. The offer ranges from shirting fabrics of the highest level and innovative proposals of cotton blends to clean and compact, pure linen and noble fibers respecting the environment. Certified GOTS and Oeko-Tex 100, the industrial cycle takes place entirely within the group’s factories in Italy and our fabrics are all made in compliance with ZDHC standards.

Ipekis I Lane Bugella

Spring.Summer 23 is all about nature inspirations for Ipekis: Focused on the beauty of the material which is used without adding anything to it and drawing attention to the essential, essence and simplicity. Besides, the mixed theme shows the differences between visual and tactile features and aims to be unconventional, powerful and interesting. The color palette consists of green, blue and yellow tones that make you feel safe and consistent while purple, orange and brown tones stand for excitement and optimism.

Pontex

The Pontex palette for Spring.Summer 23 is made up of tonic and vibrant colors such as bright and intense green, golden yellow, fleshy ocher, couture pink. The choice of raw materials is inspired by the Earth and focuses on textile productions that respect nature and the environment: natural raw materials and organic and sustainable fibers, cellulosic plant fibers such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, linen, Tencel and ramie.

Seidra Textilwerke

The main focus of the new collection is on sustainability. In addition to highlighting linen, Seidra Textilwerke’s collection is filled with many new weavings and color interlacing. ReSOURCE: The Denim Edit

Sourcing Sustainable Denim at ReSOURCE

12. July 2021

The denim industry is taking innovative steps towards denim manufacturing that is cleaner, more respectful to our environment and that uses fewer resources. While each mill, launderer and denim service provider who exhibits at BLUEZONE are champions of sustainability in their own right, there is a growing ethos in the denim community and at our shows to support one another and grow towards a cleaner industry together.

Together with ReSOURCE, our online sourcing platform for sustainable materials, we are able to evaluate denim according to different sustainable criteria across the fiber, dyeing and finishing stages of denim production. Understanding how the material is made, under which conditions, from which materials and the production methods will go a long way to deciding which sustainable denim is relevant to you and your brand. Get to know the leading 3 material criteria you need to know about when it comes to sourcing sustainable denim:

Copyright: Lenzing Photographer: Richard Ramos

Lyocell Tencel®

Lyocell is a manufacturing process of rayon which is much more eco-friendly than its relatives modal and viscose. Lyocell is made in a closed-loop system that recycles almost all of the chemicals used. Tencel® is made from eucalyptus from PEFC certified forests. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly without the use of pesticides, fertilizers or irrigation.

Look for denim which contain Tencel if you are interested in:

  • Low water usage
  • Using renewable resources
  • Chemical control
  • GMO free
  • No soil erosion
  • Biodegradable

Eco Stretch

Fiber innovations such as Creora, Eco Lycra and Roica EcoSmart Elastane provide a biodegradable alternative, however stretch denim is synonymous with synthetics and will typically contain a percentage of either polyester, nylon or elastane. Until recently it was not possible for a stretch denim to be 100% biodegradable but soon Canidani, will launch their latest Bio-Stretch fabric Covera™  at BLUEZONE on August 31st 2021.

Look for eco stretch denim if you are interested in:

  • Reducing the time for the product to degrade
  • Reduce the amount of synthetic fibers used in production
  • Blending fibers to produce new qualities

Recycled Polyester Credit: Textile Exchange

Recycled Fibers

A lot of research is underway to making denim using post-consumer and post-production waste. Often, recycled fibers make up only a percentage of the overall composition of the final denim product. Typically the most popular recycled materials used in denim production include: cotton; polyester; post-consumer denim; post-consumer fibers; PET and nylon.

Look for denim which contains recycled fibers if you are interested in:

  • Using waste materials
  • Diverting waste from landfills
  • Reducing waste
  • Low water usage
  • Low energy usage
  • Blending fibers to produce new qualities

Other sustainable fibers you should know about when it comes to sourcing sustainable denim include: Refibra, Ecovero, Creora, Roica, Cupro.

Other sustainable certifications you should get to know when it comes to sourcing sustainable denim are: OekoTex, GRS, BCI, OCS Blended, OCS 100, ISO 14001.

ReSOURCE: Sustainable Leather & Alternatives

Here’s what to look for in Leather Alternatives at ReSOURCE

17. June 2021

Whatever has led you here, you are already thinking about the reasons a brand has for choosing between the seemingly massive range of leathers and leather alternatives available. This decision usually begins with a basic understanding of the manufacturing processes in order to decide, does the final material reflect brand values, share brand beliefs and share the same innovative approach? To help choose the best option for you, we provide material highlights from our recent showcase on ReSOURCE to directly connect you with industry partners who can support in your next steps.

There are over 50 kinds of sustainable textile and material certifications used across our materials showcased online and at our shows with ReSOURCE. Get to know which 4 you should be familiar with when it comes to sourcing sustainable leathers and leather alternative materials:

Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex

Specifically tailored to leather articles which have been tested for harmful substances. Certification can be awarded for leather semi-finished products, finished leather, leather fibre materials up to finished articles and accessories.

Look for Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex certified materials if you are interested in:

  • using real leather materials
  • materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
  • ensuring your products are harmless to health

Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex

All types of textiles that have been tested for harmful substances, from yarns to the finished product, may bear the STANDARD 100 product label.

Look for Oeko-Tex 100 certified materials if you are interested in:

  • certified materials with an innovative approach
  • materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
  • ensuring your products are harmless to health

V-Label by European Vegetarian Union (EVU)

The only requirement of this certificate is that the product is vegan/vegetarian, meaning the product must not contains products of animal origin; no animal auxiliaries may be used during the production process.

Look for V-Label certified materials:

  • to ensure materials which are vegan, cruelty free and animal friendly
  • to include in brand marketing, communication and raise brand awareness
  • support the development of further innovative textile and accessories vegan alternatives

Cradle to Cradle by Cradle to Cradle (C2C)

Cradle to cradle (C2C) is an approach to a continuous and consistent recycling management. “Cradle-to-cradle products” are therefore those that can either be returned to biological cycles as biological nutrients or can be continuously kept in technical cycles as “technical nutrients”.

Look for Cradle to Cradle certified materials if you are interested in:

  • ensuring production is focused on reducing water wastage and usage, fostering a closed loop system using wet processes
  • materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
  • materials which use reduced energy in the supply chain, with use of renewable energy with minimal reliance on petro-chemicals
  • materials which reduce and recycle waste throughout the textile supply chain

Other sustainable certifications to get to know when sourcing sustainable leathers & alternatives include: IVN Naturleder, Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) + Global Recycled Stand (GRS)

ReSOURCE: The Recyled Edit

ReSOURCE: A CLOSER LOOK AT RECYCLED MATERIALS

29. April 2021

Conscious fashion can mean many different things, but for you as an ethical fashion brand it means starting at the very foundations to ensure your garments are part of the solution and not adding to the problems caused by fast fashion and over consumption.

While virgin fibres and organic naturals are certainly the first fabrics which come to mind, there is not one fabric which is inherently without fault. Therefore, when thinking of which fabrics to feature in your new collections, why not consider that recycled fabrics offer diverse and innovative solutions to one of the fashion industry’s biggest pollutant problems; reusing and repurposing materials which already exist.

With each new season, more innovative materials and processes are launched with ReSOURCE. Directly supporting the growth of textile recycling as a way to ensure more materials are diverted from landfills.Let’s take a look at the diverse performance, functions and blends of recycled fabrics which are showcased on our sustainable sourcing platform, ReSOURCE.

Ecosim – BLUEZONE Presents Denim Beyond the Seasons

ECOISM

Reject egoism, create ecoism, rewrite your future.

Our world needs to spare a thought… consumption, mass production, benefits and our ecosystems. ECOISM thrives on our need for a better world, for true sustainable solutions and the rethinking/overhaul of our industrial blue planet.

In a denim world moving at social media speed, denim trends are key to benefit end consumers and the industry with a clear direction. The BLUEZONE trend direction is split into two main categories to reflect our present and our future: themes which directly address fabric and product development, such as NO STRETCH or BLUE WELLNESS. And themes which tackle the important trending styles in our world, such as POWER DRESSING and ANTI BEAUTY.

SHARING becomes more than a simple theme, it is the space where business becomes altruistic, where growth rhymes with sharing profit: A different way of conceiving denim in our modern world. “Sustainability is not a trend, but every trend should be sustainable.”

The following trend directions develop under the main topic ECOISM:

SHARING
Altruistic manufacturing, altruistic products, brand initiatives. Think: Products made in collaboration with people in need, small associations, handicapped. Products in which the benefits go to those in need.

NO STRETCH
Novelties without stretch…male & female, gender neutral. Think: Wider fits are their way to becoming mainstream and need a new generation of more rigid, more compact fabrics. Trend looks are more relevant with crisp somewhat rigid denim. Surfaces might be soft but compact weaving is key.

CLASHING CONTRASTS
A revolution in taste is key. Printed denim, coloured denim, and striped denim. Think: Jacquards, fancy weaves in unusual patchworks, layers, colour blockings. Strange visual matches, creating the antidote to harmony.

POWER DRESSING
Power dressing for a tough future. When politics go wrong, power dressing strikes back. Think: Business denim with a stylish twist. Power dressing also for men.

BLUE WELLNESS
The need for a soothing denim product. Denim that takes care of your skin, brain & body. Think: Fibers, coatings, ingredients, softness, anything that makes you and your body feel better.

SARTORIAL PUNK
No future. Sartorial denim against Friday wear. A punk attitude with elegant codes. Think: Bleached and spotted denim. Black, grey, white denim, stretch and rigid fabrications.

ACID PASTELS
The key is subtly in the effects. Acid fade-outs. Gritty yet pastel tenderness. Flowers, flowers, flowers … &animals, prints and solids. Think Acid effects on denim are key and tend to stay for some time. What is the next generation of acid and pastel effects on denim …

ANTI BEAUTY
Strange is the new beauty. Strange denim, strange products. New aesthetics, new proportions, sartorial, oversized, asymmetrical. Think: Flat-finished denim, reactive dye denim, Indigo denim.

Planet REhab Capsule: Celebrating Sustainable Collaboration

It is great to have organic fibres, right? But as a producer of fibres, the influence on a more sustainable textile production often stops here. Textile garments have complex supply chains which sometimes imply production partners all over the world. That’s why the solution for a more coherent and holistic form of sustainability often lies in right supply chain partnerships!

That’s the idea behind the so called “Planet Rehab” capsule collection, for which renowned textile companies, who are environmentally committed, have partnered up to create something bigger than their own.

The collection was presented during last edition of KEYHOUSE in January. MUNICH FABRIC START feels especially committed about this project as all project partners – Lenzing, Tejidos Royo, Officina +39, and Tonello have been long term exhibitors at the fair.

These companies recognized the success to achieving their own goals lies in fulfilling their shared ones, by working collaboratively and responsibly – seeking out more sustainable raw materials, implementing new technologies and employing processes that reduce resource utilization and waste. Juan Carlos Gordillo designed the Rehab collection around Lenzing’s TENCEL™ and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded lyocell fabrics from Tejidos Royo. The fabrics were dyed using Recycrom technology from Officina+39 and the resultant garments finished by Tonello.

Lenzing’s TENCEL™ and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded lyocell fibers enhance the sustainable qualities of the fabrics. Made from renewable wood in a closed loop, energy and resource efficient manufacturing process, TENCEL™ fibers and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ fibers made with recycled cotton scraps provide the fabrics with softness, smoothness, tenacity, and color intensity.

Spanish fabric producer, Tejidos Royo, creates “fabric with values” through the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The manufacturer’s vertical business model has substantially reduced its energy consumption and CO2 emissions through aggressive R&D and provides complete transparency and traceability for their customers

Officina+39’s Recycrom dyes are made from recycled clothing and textile scraps that are specially processed by these Italian experts through a sophisticated production process using only natural chemicals. Waste fabrics are crystalized into an incredibly fine powder that can be used as a pigment dye. Recycrom received the Hightex Award at MUNICH FABRIC START for Autumn/Winter 17/18.

Laundry specialist Tonello also based in Italy, contributed their ECOFREE 2 technology to the project. Fulfilling the needs of the designers and their customers, Tonello’s revolutionary washing process significantly reduces the water and hazardous chemical consumption typically associated with denim finishing.

Guatemalan designer, Juan Carlos Gordillo, applauds the Planet REhab objectives and used the member companies’ products to create fifteen women’s outfits that celebrate life and nature with exceptional color flair and a decidedly Latin influence. The full collection was displayed during the last edition of KEYHOUSE in January 2019, showcasing the eclectic and artistic style for which Gordillo is known for.

“Planet REhab is my tribute to the ocean with its deep colors and flowing shapes,” the celebrated designer says. “The collection also protects the ocean because it is created from the sustainable fibers, fabrics, dyes, and finishing techniques perfected by the Planet REhab collaborating companies. While many companies talk about being sustainable, these companies had the courage to actually create sustainable products and processes that benefit the industry, society, and the planet. I hope this collection can inspire other designers to prioritize sustainability in their creative processes.”
