What is currently happening in the industry of innovators, <\/span>transformers and forwardthinkers?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Different<\/span> developments<\/span> can<\/span> be<\/span> observed<\/span> \u2013<\/span> especially<\/span> when<\/span> it<\/span> comes<\/span> to <\/span>upcoming designers and creators, which is very interesting yet inspiring. <\/span>Newcomers are about either<\/span> entering the industry or creating their own one<\/span><\/strong>; <\/span>furthermore, they all developed a very high<\/span> professionalism<\/span><\/strong> in everything they <\/span>do and how they present their ideas. Storytelling matters, that\u2019s why we see <\/span>crafts that concern and that communicate<\/span><\/strong> about thoughts, materials and <\/span>backgrounds. They somehow reflect on the state of the industry and\/or they <\/span>question current systems. Just with the eye on possibilities, not to add critique. <\/span>It is a friendly way to inspire.<\/span><\/p>\n

You just said creators are \u201centering the industry or creating their own one\u201d. <\/span>What do you mean by that?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Well, actually right as I say. Either people and ideas<\/span> enter an industry OR they <\/span>create an industry<\/span><\/strong>. Entering means that designers or creators just fit into an <\/span>industry and can get part of it or they can develop their own techniques and <\/span>make it scalable and somehow create their own. Let me give you an example: <\/span>WINT Design Lab discovered a new material and also discovered how to use it <\/span>in order to make it relevant for the market. Either they can enter the industry <\/span>OR if they find possibilities to cover all the needs within the supply chain and <\/span>develop the machines to produce in a big scale, they could go big and just <\/span>create their own industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

What other developments can you identify?<\/span><\/h4>\n

Back in the days, let\u2019s say about five years ago, there was mainly one person <\/span>behind a new idea that was working within a tiny studio. Compared to that, <\/span>everything is so much more professional: being a material designer, you can <\/span>have a studio and work with employees who assist. That is nowadays how <\/span>designers get ready to present their idea to the market. You need people who <\/span>bridge the gap between the studio and the market. I personally recognize a <\/span>huge potential in this point of<\/span> professionalism<\/span>, because people get<\/span> ready to <\/span>connect<\/span> \u2013 young designers now offer representative samples and get in touch <\/span>with the industry on a very professional level. Newcomers inspire the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

What sounds very interesting. What do the newcomers do differently?<\/h4>\n

Things that impress the industry:<\/span> crafts that concern and communicate<\/span><\/strong>. The <\/span>designers and their innovations want to tell us stories: it\u2019s about the material, <\/span>systems (and old behaviours) but also the designs. We can get glimpses into <\/span>cultural backgrounds, different techniques, social aspects and so much more. <\/span>For example, the project \u201cRootful\u201d by Zena Holloway and the project \u201cChoub\u201d by <\/span>Mehdi Mashayekhi show off how to create a material out of seagrass or wood <\/span>with the implemented idea to use the finished garment or the designs as tools <\/span>to communicate.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a positive development, isn\u2019t it?<\/h4>\n

Yes, it is. But one thing should not be forgotten: we are in the middle of a <\/span>delicate discussion on the urgency of creating, within that everybody has to<\/span>
put their own position into a fresh perspective. I sometimes find it important <\/span>to take a bit of a distance and ask rhetorically questions like:<\/span> So what?<\/span> We are<\/span>
leaving the era of RE-thinking we are entering an era of PRE-thinking. We can <\/span>challenge ourselves in critical self-reflection with a future smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

We should not design just to be a designer or cook just for the sake of being <\/span>a chef. We should not create just to be a creator. We should not just buy new <\/span>stuff, only for the sake of being a consumer. Way more, we should cook when <\/span>people need food, design when designs are not good enough and create when <\/span>the world needs a new product. Let\u2019s stay critical and ask ourselves over and <\/span>over again: how do our actions contribute to the better?<\/span><\/p>\n
