Most of the dyes we use are of synthetic origin,\u00a0 which <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">poses potential health risks \u2013 both in the manufacturing process and in the dyeing <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">process or use. In addition, dyes and pigments in industrial wastewater are not <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">infrequently released into the environment, where they remain and damage ecosystems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">MycoColors, a project by designer Birke Weber and biochemist Friederike Hoberg, addresses <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">precisely this problem. The two are researching the potential of alternative dyes \u2013 specifically: <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from fungi. But the end customers <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cannot trace everything that <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is hidden in a purchased T-shirt or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">carpet.
