From robust natural materials in contrast to shimmer, glitter, stretch and mesh in a colour spectrum ranging from light natural tones and off-white to pastel, bright power colours and warm, reddish purple and brown tones to black: yesterday, Wednesday, the VIEW Premium Selection came to an end after two days at the MVG Museum in Munich. There, international producers kicked off the new season with their approximately 300 pre-collections and presented their new material developments and colours for Spring.Summer 2024 at the Preview Textile Show organised by Munich Fabric Start GmbH.

The focus was on materials that evoke emotions on both a visual and tactile level. For styles that range from super sexy, sheer and tight, to classical suit looks and extremely wide cuts, to workwear elements. “Whether it’s fashion, design or gender, this season is about finding more optimism and harmony. In menswear, gender identity and sensuality meet boundless imagination and become an integral part; in womenswear, we confidently and uninhibitedly emphasise all facets of femininity. From glamour to easy going – it’s all about expressing our personality and uniqueness. The trend is towards a casual attitude; sexiness becomes practical and is found either in workwear or in functional styles. The colour palette ranges from muted whites and greys to eye-catching, summery reds and rich pinks or bright yellows,” confirms Karin Schmitz, Business Development Director of the Trendforecast Institute Peclers Paris at VIEW in Munich.

A time of upheaval

The fact that the market is in a state of upheaval and companies are facing major challenges and changes were topics in many conversations. “There is great uncertainty in the market. The, let’s call it ‘political game’, is not making it easy for European producers. Energy costs have increased nine to tenfold here in Slovenia. Politicians must finally find an overarching European solution to support companies,” says Tomaz Bavec, Area Sales Manager, Tekstina. Ralf Laufenberg, Sales Manager of Yünsa, also notices that decisions are being made more in favour of price: “For almost every article we offer, we have had a sustainable alternative for about three years. However, in order to be able to maintain corner price ranges, many are opting for the cheaper offer at the moment. Nevertheless, I am convinced that sustainability will become the standard.”

„The trend towards casual, comfortable and sporty fashion is unstoppable and has now also established itself in HAKA. With the new yarns “SOLOTEX® and DELTA® developed by Teijin, we are able to offer a wide range of different sporty, light, packable and technical polyester articles with a bit of function. A trend that is pervasive: All well-known brands want to use only predominantly environmentally friendly materials. This trend and the desire for green stories also influences the development of new fabrics: fine nylons that feel like cotton or fabrics with a BASF fibre obtained from discarded car tyres. The more sporty a collection is, the more it is about a mix of technological and aesthetic innovation – weight is a big topic as well, as are rip-stops and transparency.“

Just before reaching the goal to realise a fully booked trade show at pre-pandemic level in just a few days, it is unimaginably difficult for us to write the following lines right now:

The political regulations in Bavaria of 19/11/2021 and the associated, strongly limiting conditions for events starting from an incidence of 1000 have far-reaching consequences for the VIEW Premium Selection. Due to the currently strong increase in the infection rates in Munich, the Preview Textile Show planned for 30/11 – 01/12/2021 must now be canceled as a precaution.

Finally: the beloved VIEW Premium Selection is back! The fully booked Preview Textile Show will take place in a few days, on 30 November and 01 December 2021, in a familiar atmosphere at the MVG Museum in Munich. Following the example of the successfully implemented MUNICH FABRIC START Autumn.Winter 22/23, the organisers are very pleased to realise the first physical trade show for Spring.Summer 23 – of course, Covid-19 compliant.

The industry can look forward to a live event at pre-pandemic level: Around 80 selected exhibitors will present 300 collections, the usual high-quality portfolio in the areas of Fabrics, Additionals, Design Studios as well as Denim and Sportswear. Renowned weavers and manufacturers such as Liberty, Yünsa, Manteco, Tejidos Royo or Lanificio Roma as well as the well-known agencies Max Müller, Agentur Geiger or Püttmann Textilagentur, to name just a few, will be on site.

Our highest priority: your security! We keep a very close eye on current developments and continually assess the options and requirements for physical trade fairs in times of a pandemic. The most important prerequisite is that our trade fairs can take place safely, smoothly and compliant with Covid-19 for our visitors and everyone involved.

After carefully examining the needs, options and applicable Covid-19 measures, we decided to organise VIEW Premium Selection from 13 – 14 July 2021 – one week after Frankfurt Fashion Week – in the MOC and coal bunker on the Zenith site.

With this one-time change of location, a trade fair in compliance with the necessary requirements for Covid-19 is possible: Besides a spacious venue and outside area, generous stand and catering areas, wide walking paths to maintain the minimum distances, good infrastructure, sufficient parking spaces, nearby accommodation as well as efficient ventilation systems with fresh air supply are provided here. Therefore, the complete trade fair event is located in one place.

The traditional VIEW summer feeling awaits you in the outside area of the Drivers Club, which connects the MOC with the Zenith area. Of course, we will offer our usual services such as trend forums, café bars and free lunches in order to be able to offer you the familiar atmosphere of VIEW.

The spacious area offers the possibility of realising VIEW as a satellite concept. We are planning to spread out the individual exhibition areas from one another in order to separate the trade fair across this spacious area.

Following the successful staging of FABRIC DAYS at the beginning of September 2020 as the first physical trade fair after the lockdown, we have started planning the next round of trade fairs for the Spring.Summer 22 season. Our aim was to realise VIEW Premium Selection as a Preview Textile Fair to compliment the main trade fair which would follow 6 weeks later in Munich.

However, over the past few days the situation has changed drastically and with it the starting position. Current Covid-19 developments and the uncertainty of any changes move us further away from the certainty of being able to realise VIEW in the usual professional way in just a few weeks time. Further measures such as extended travel restrictions are not foreseeable at this point in time.

REALISATION OF VIEW PREMIUM SELECTION NO LONGER POSSIBLE

As a result of the current crucial developments, we no longer consider a trade fair at the beginning of December to be justifiable or responsible. After all, the health and safety of all exhibitors, visitors and participants at the trade fairs always has top priority. We feel compelled to cancel VIEW Premium Selection from 1 – 2 December 2020.

“The decision to cancel the VIEW Preview trade fair is a difficult one, however it must be based on our sense of safety and responsibility. After all, there are only a few weeks left until the beginning of December – a very short time in which the risk cannot be sufficiently assessed based on rates on infection to continue planning VIEW. We have reached a point where we should reduce our travel and social contacts to a minimum – at least for the time being with the option to resume again in the coming weeks.“

Our team is now concentrating on organising the second edition of FABRIC DAYS from 2-4 March 2021 and is confident that they will be able to offer the textile industry the usual date to present the Spring.Summer 22 collections.

The condensed, business focused format of FABRIC DAYS offers the required flexibility to be able to adapt quickly to any changes in the coming months. The main objective here is to offer the industry the necessary planning security and a physical textile fair for personal exchange. In this way, we particularly rely on the support of the textile industry and the confidence placed in them during this extraordinary time.

VIEW PREMIUM SELECTION IN JULY 2020 CANCELLED

To our dear exhibitors, visitors and fashion community,

In the current difficult and uncertain situation, it is more important than ever to work together and to face the newly emerging challenges as a strong community. In that respect, we are aware of the great importance and relevance our trade fairs has for manufacturers and fashion companies as a platform for exchange and business.

Like you, we have dealt extensively with the continuous developments around Covid-19 in recent weeks and are in close contact with authorities, service companies, associations and players in the textile industry to develop possible scenarios for the organisation of trade fairs.

Following the political decisions of 15 April 2020 and the associated extended ban on major events in Germany until 31 August 2020, we held valuable discussions with other trade fair organisers and visitors. Also, in view of the fact that VIEW does not necessarily fall under the definition of a major event, we asked our exhibitors in a survey about their current situation and the situation of the market to examine whether the timing for a preview trade fair makes sense under the given circumstances.

The survey showed that the majority of the market has no need for a preview textile fair in this extraordinary situation, as new collections cannot be developed in time due to the confirmed production delays. Moreover, the ban on major events and travel restrictions, which are likely to remain in place for some time and vary from country to country within the EU, does not allow for the necessary planning for a trade fair event in July. Another aspect is the active uncertainty among exhibitors and visitors operating outside of Germany when considering visiting a trade fair in just a few weeks. The unknown availability regarding hotels and restaurants during a stay in Munich reinforces this. Above all, the health and safety of our exhibitors and visitors is our top priority.

“Based on these valuable insights and the feedback of experts and producers against the background of current developments, we are compelled to cancel VIEW Premium Selection on July 14 – 15, 2020. This decision is a very difficult one for us. We deeply regret that we will not be able to hold our beloved VIEW this summer – especially since we know how important it is for the textile industry to exchange personal information and resume business relations as quickly as possible. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our exhibitors, visitors and our service partners for their great loyalty, optimism and trust in us at all times which we greatly appreciate. We’re continuing to do our best to provide an optimal platform as soon as possible.”

During this difficult and uncertain phase, the thoughts and sympathy of the entire MUNICH FABRIC START team are especially with people who live in countries without a functioning healthcare system or facing evacuation. We are aware of the impact on the global textile industry and see the great challenges our industry has to face.

As trade fair organisers, the current situation also prevents the heart of our business: bringing together people and exchanging information in the industry. We are aware of the great importance and relevance of our trade fair for manufacturers and fashion companies.

In this situation, the next meeting and exchange of ideas will become incredibly important. We want to set an example by offering a perspective and providing the textile industry a platform with optimal conditions as soon as possible. To achieve this, we remain flexible in our actions and are prepared to respond to any future developments. We are currently organising the next fair as usual and are working at full capacity to ensure that MUNICH FABRIC START in September 2020 can take place on the planned date.

The current time of isolation and social distancing affects all players in the industry which is why coming together at the fair will be immensely valuable. This is confirmed by the usual high number of registrations and positive feedback we are currently receiving. BLUEZONE is already fully booked for September 2020 and we are stunned by the great amount of trust and loyalty placed in us.

At this point in time, it is still too early to make a final statement on the execution of the trade fair. Should there be any changes, we will of course inform you as soon as possible. We are in close contact with other trade fair organizers and rely on the findings of experts and political decisions, without our own interpretations or statements on the current social and political issues.

There are still several months until our trade fair date – valuable time which can be decisive. For the moment, it means waiting for developments in the next few weeks and making decisions on this basis. At this point, we also try to put ourselves in the position of the exhibitors and visitors to find solutions which are best for all parties involved. To this end, we are currently examining various scenarios with which we can react flexibly and in a solution-oriented manner to any changes in government guidelines for events.

As in the recent past, the range of collections offered by printers, knitters, weavers and denim specialists is already clearly defined in many areas. In exchange with designers and product managers and taking into account current trends, the range will be extended and adapted accordingly until MUNICH FABRIC START, 4th – 6th February 2020.

It is already apparent that the range of colours is moving in the direction of brown, cognac and terracotta; that black and white combinations are becoming important; that red with a slight orange hue is gaining significance and blue in various shades is increasingly in demand.

 ‘Right at the beginning of the first day, we served numerous visitors from Germany and Austria. At the moment, we are already presenting up to 80 percent of the new collection. In the weeks after Christmas we will add an additional Capsule collection. There is great interest in sustainable articles. We will be developing further qualities for this in time for the main trade fair.‘

Florals and newly interpreted batiks continue to dominate the prints as striking all-overs. Digitally applied kaleidoscopic interpretations are just as convincing as large format graphics and panneaux prints. Structured effects and crepe yarns are important, even in plain colours. Linen is widely accepted in various interpretations. From irregular plain colours to woven stripes, checks and jacquards. The trend towards cotton and cotton blends in combination with Tencel is strong once again. In contrast to this are articles with a technical finish – now even extending into the classically oriented women’s and menswear.
The demand for comfortable textiles with some part stretch is also increasing among high-fashion producers or even couture suppliers.

 ‘This edition of VIEW was a very successful premiere for us. We will be back again in summer for the next VIEW event. The response to our wide range of print collections was pleasingly positive. In discussions with numerous customers, we received a lot of input about the future development of our collection in time for MUNICH FABRIC START.‘

Many of the collections presented at VIEW will now be further revised in the coming weeks and presented at the MUNICH FABRIC START February 4^th-6^th 2020, at which a total of around 1,000 suppliers will present their Spring.Summer collections.

As anticipated, VIEW Premium Selection positioned itself strongly as an early trend-setting trade fair format for the new season. From December 3^rd to 4^th 2019, leading international suppliers from the Fabrics and Additionals segments presented around 360 refined collections for Spring.Summer 2021. All major German brands as well as numerous brands and designers from neighbouring countries were represented in Munich.

The overwhelming acceptance by high-quality visitors is once again a clear indication of this exclusive event with its very special flair.

Overall, the atmosphere at VIEW was efficient and positive, despite the challenging tasks in many areas of the industry. These were discussed in a committed and solution-oriented manner during intensive discussions. The very complex subject of sustainability and transparency in the production and logistics processes, the partly decreasing margins for the fabric manufacturers, the currently threatening or completed company insolvencies within the ready-made clothing sector were just some of the topics discussed.

’With great encouragement from the exhibitors and the continuously developing visitor frequency, especially on a heavily visited second day of the fair, the VIEW event as an early Fabric Trade Fair is the ideal preparation for the MUNICH FABRIC START in February. Despite the overlapping dates initiated by Milano Unica, we are convinced after discussions with exhibitors and visitors that we can expect three successful trade fair days in Munich with the usual strong international portfolio.’

The need for early direction and information is great. Also against the background that leading ready-made clothing companies are reorganising their planning, rethinking their delivery and collection rhythms or have already redefined them for the future.

 ‘The VIEW event, as a business and communication platform is becoming increasingly important for us, as we will start the season even earlier in the future. All of our divisions were on site for the entire two days of the fair. We have already gained very good insights into the upcoming colour directions. Also with regards to the spectrum of innovative qualities. There have been very nice developments in the linen sector, for example in combination with Tencel.‘

Sonja Kiefer, designer from Munich, also used VIEW as the location for a TV programme and was equally impressed by the broad and fashionably sophisticated offer for the new summer season.

The high quality and fashion competency of the fabrics here fit perfectly into the genre of my rather classic evening wear. Mainly these include satin, crepe, double face with even more stretch for greater comfort also within event fashion.‘

We are delighted to welcome, Barth & Könenkamp Seiden as a new exhibitor to VIEW Premium Selection as one of ten newcomers set to showcase their latest developments and new collections for Spring.Summer 2021.

Founded in 1954, the Bremen based silk specialists Barth & Könenkamp Seiden was founded and revived from a heritage dating back over 130 years to 1885.

Exclusively engaged in the import and export of pure silk qualities and a few mixed fabrics mostly from China and India. As a specialist in the field of silk fabrics and because of regular visits in the manufacturing countries they are able to ensure the import of only the highest quality silks. With about 125 different silk qualities in more than 2000 colors, their range is the most exclusive in the whole of Europe. The majority of qualities are available immediately.

What can visitors look forward to from your new range?
Of course Crepe de Chine Stretch, but as well Satin Organza is one of the new products in our range. What’s more we have recently extended the colour range available for Satin Stretch.

Tell us a little about the design, development or creative processes at Barth Seiden?
Years of established business relationships in the international fashion industry allows us to recognize any trend and to be an important part in the future development of fashion. We respond exclusively to customer needs and have many years of experience in the field of “value addition” – for example embroidery and other applications.

From the 3^rd – 4^th December 2019, VIEW Premium Selection will showcase the first material developments, qualities and colour tendencies for the new SPRING.SUMMER 2021 season a few weeks prior to MUNICH FABRIC START. TEXCART, TEJIDOS ROYO, LANIFICIO ROMA, DUTEL CREATION and BORNEMANN ETIKETTEN are among our exhibitors who will join the expanded presentation of sustainable fabrics and accessories showcased at VIEW:

What does it mean to your company to take more responsibility in terms of micro plastic and overconsumption?

TEXCART: It has been our focus for the last 5 years, starting with the materials we use on a daily basis; boxes, envelopes, general use paper, collection boards, stickers, where possible these are made in recycled paper and recycled material. In terms of over consumption, we care about enacting change and so we typically produce our articles on demand to reduce leftovers.

TEJIDOS ROYO: With the pioneering DryIndigo® technology developed by Spanish manufacturer Tejidos Royo, it is now possible to use 0% water in the denim production process. This is a real milestone in the textile industry. It also reduces energy consumption by 65% during manufacture, uses 89% less chemical products, and completely eliminates waste water discharge. As a result of implementing DryIndigo® technology in 2019, Tejidos Royo has saved more than 1 million litres of water used in denim dyeing. The economic contribution from the first million litters saved has been donated to UNICEF for its water and sanitation programmes which improve the lives of thousands of children around the world.

DUTEL: For the last 2 years, Dutel has been developing a sustainable range called ‘PURE’ which uses recycled polyester warp and organic cotton weft yarns. We plan to swap all our polyester warps into recycled ones. The challenge is to make an entirely sustainable collection and to source the serious reliable suppliers with traceability. For years we have collected and recycled any waste in our factory. As well, a new air conditioning system has considerably reduced our electricity consumption.

BORNEMANN: Besides providing sustainable labelling solutions for our customers, we aim to optimize our internal processes as well. By digitalizing our documentation, working on rapid prototyping and investing an increasing amount of time and effort in digital sampling we are reducing input of resources on various levels.

Tell us about the latest collection you are exhibiting at VIEW?

TEXCART: Our collection, as usual, will be complex and composed of several articles produced in a variety of materials, techniques and designs. We have prepared different themes which follow the tendencies but also in sustainable and recycled materials and as always we will feature a range of denim accessories. We are continuously updated in terms of tendencies, new techniques and materials, especially in sustainable and eco-friendly news through our large network of professional partners.

LANIFICIO ROMA: At Lanificio Roma we are sensitive to the use of recycled yarns, many fabrics of the latest collection are eco-sustainable. The qualities in our eco-cotton and viscose ECOVERO are made with sustainable yarns.

DUTEL: Summer 2021 by this jacquard specialist makes the most of shiny effects on vibrant, crunchy surfaces. Taffeta and voile grounds are enriched with transparent shines with a cellophane crunch. The colour palette is built on whites and pearly whites. Surfaces are covered with iridescent yarns to create hairy effects. Lightweight, cotton-like jacquards are lit up with a pearly sheen, patterns resonate thanks to colourfully iridescent yarns. Filigree or bold florals paired with bright stripes are enhanced with a colourful gleam.

BORNEMANN: We present our latest developments for Women/Menswear Denim, Modern Casual and Workwear. The challenge of workwear lies in combining fashion and function, materials need to fulfil certain standard specifications. Among other items, we are showing several flame-retardant products, woven, printed and silicon that stand up to current norms.

Shop less, waste less, produce less. What are the biggest challenges for you to continue to be successful and sustainable?

TEJIDOS ROYO: In the textile industry, we need to rework our processes to become a much more sustainable industry. DryIndigo is a major milestone in this area, and we hope that it inspires both the sector and the brands to develop more technologies that contribute to making our industry a much more responsible one towards our surroundings. We are facing the sustainable denim revolution and, with One Million Liters, we want everyone to take part in it so that, together, we can meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals before 2030.

LANIFICIO ROMA: We produce recycled raw material fabrics to offer significant benefits to our planet. We have created a new product with reduced water consumption, in order to fight the effects of the increase in pollution and excessive consumption. Our aim is to waste less and re-use production and consumer waste as new resources.

DUTEL: Our target is to offer top quality which is lasting over the years, especially for our ‘ALLURE‘ range which offer timeless, subtle textures and enlarges our offer for different customers types such as accessories, scarves, shoes, hats, but also kidswear. Produce less? No! To guarantee our business’ survival, we cannot produce less, but more instead offer more variety. Not to produce less, but produce better!

BORNEMANN: Balancing creativity, sustainability and efficiency seems to be the biggest challenge. In our day to day, this means we have to cooperate closely with our customers to understand their priorities. And, in the long run, work towards a situation where none of the three aspects are in conflict with each other. Digitalisation has a big impact on this, so mastering the challenges of digitalisation is our priority as a company.

Research which products you are looking for and find the exhibitors ahead of time. Ask your sales teams, what products are the most popular? What fabrics will be essential for your new collections? Are you missing those all-important trim details?

Come prepared with two lists: The ‘Must’ list and the ‘Bonus’ list. The ‘Must’ list will detail the fabrics or trims which you 100% need going forward for the new season. Whereas the ‘Bonus’ list reminds you of the items you would like but factors like budget and design direction or time limitations mean you’re not desperate to lock down. Be clear about your needs and specify; weight; width; colour; fiber; composition or structure.

Arrange to meet with your existing partners as well as new brands at the show. Scheduling in advance means less time spent in queues at that specific supplier and guarantees valuable conversation time.
