Understanding How Data Tackles Challenges in the Textile Industry

Data might feel intimidating for the fashion and textile industry, but it holds the power to unlock transparency, boost efficiency, and spark innovation. Traci Kinden, Director at TEXroad Foundation, shares her insights in an interview with Muchaneta ten Napel from Shape Innovate on how small, strategic steps and collaboration can transform data into a force for positive change.

Muchaneta: Let’s start with the big question: why does data seem so intimidating to people in the textile industry?
Traci: Data is such a small word with immense meaning, and everyone interprets it differently. If you don’t see yourself as a “numbers person,” it can feel overwhelming and even scary. A lot of the fear stems from misconceptions about what data is and how it can be used. But I’m determined to change that perspective and show that data can be accessible – and even exciting!

Muchaneta: That’s a great goal. Can you explain what TEXroad does with data to bridge these gaps?
Traci: At TEXroad, we work primarily in post-consumer textile flows. We partner with municipalities and their collection and sorting teams to gather data at every stage – collection, sorting, and processing. This data allows us to evaluate how systems are performing and measure the impact of changes over time. Additionally, we’re involved in EU-funded projects, like PESCO Up, where we develop minimum data requirements for textile recycling chains. Our goal is to make data a shared, standardized language that benefits the entire value chain.

Muchaneta: Speaking of EU-funded projects, what ensures the longevity of such initiatives after their official end?
Traci: EU-funded projects have defined start and end dates, but we strive to make their outcomes scalable and sustainable. For example, in PESCO Up, we’ve developed minimum data requirements for the recycling chain. These are shared across multiple projects to ensure consistency and long-term use. At TEXroad, we also focus on publishing non-sensitive datasets for open access, so the insights remain available to the industry even after the projects conclude.

Muchaneta: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in promoting data sharing and collaboration?
Traci: One major challenge is the lack of standardization in the industry. For instance, terms like “post-industrial waste” and “pre-consumer waste” are often used interchangeably, leading to confusion. Another hurdle is companies’ hesitancy to share data due to fears of exposing sensitive information. Building trust takes time – our sales cycles can span 12 to 24 months before concrete agreements are made.

Muchaneta: Do you think legislation could help push businesses to share and use data more effectively?
Traci: Legislation has potential, but it needs to be well-designed and adaptable to market realities. It’s crucial for businesses to align their data strategies with their priorities, whether it’s compliance with legislation or operational improvements. Taking small, strategic steps – like understanding what data you have and identifying gaps – can make navigating new policies manageable.

Muchaneta: Can you share a success story where data made a tangible impact?
Traci: Absolutely. I worked with a Dutch textile preprocessor that significantly reduced its material rejection rate – from 25–30% to under 5% – by using data to communicate clear expectations to suppliers. This kind of progress demonstrates how even small-scale data applications can lead to systemic improvements.

Muchaneta: Transparency is a recurring theme. Why is it so important?
Traci: Transparency builds trust. For instance, many people hesitate to use textile collection bins because they don’t know where their clothing ends up. Data can illuminate these processes, giving people confidence in systems like extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes. Transparency also enables companies to evaluate their impact and make informed decisions.

Muchaneta: What excites you most about the future of textile data?
Traci: The potential to transform the industry excites me. Better data can level the playing field for SMEs, drive innovation, and address global issues like waste mismanagement. The possibilities are endless if we can improve data quality, accessibility, and speed.

Muchaneta: Finally, what role does TEXroad play in this transformation?
Traci: At TEXroad, we aim to answer the “stupid” questions – like how much post-consumer textile waste exists – so businesses can focus on the smarter ones. By improving data quality and accessibility, we’re helping the industry take meaningful steps toward circularity and sustainability.

Looper Textile Co. is an independent company jointly owned by the H&M Group and REMONDIS. They provide retailers and municipalities with responsible solutions to extend the useful life of garments and textiles through re-use and recycling. At Munich Fabric Start, we are excited to welcome Looper Textile Co. as one of the key players at the upcoming KEYHOUSE during the next show on January 21 + 22, 2025 in Munich. Learn more about Looper Textile Co.‘s mission to give unwanted garments a second life and how they contribute to increasing the likelihood that each garment meets its intended end state. Here’s how:

When it comes to unwanted garments, the challenges we face today are pretty overwhelming. Each year, an estimated 100 – 150 billion items of clothing are produced globally. 

  • The majority of these textiles are unfortunately fated to go to waste, contributing to resource depletion and environmental damage.
  • Globally, around 87% of discarded textiles directly end up in wrongful disposal, while more than 90% are reusable and recyclable.
  • Today, less than 1% of used clothes and other textile materials are recycled into new textile products.  At Looper Textile Co., they keep textiles out of wrongful disposal and provide solutions to extend the life of garments that are reusable. For those that can’t be reused, they ensure that the materials are recycled at their highest value.

They collect and sort garments to extend their useful life:

Collect: They collect used and unwanted garments from retailers (including leftovers, customer returns, stop orders, faulty items, and post-consumer garments collected in stores or via post). They also collect post-consumer textiles in communities (street collection), via charity shops, and directly from consumers. 

Re-use: They extend the useful life of products (garments, shoes, accessories) through responsible reuse. The majority of garments they collect are eligible for reuse. At Looper Textile Co., facilities, they sort pieces by piece into more than 200 categories so they can meet customer needs and ensure that garments will have the best possible new life. 

Recycle: They have developed an industry-leading near-infrared (NIR) sorting line equipped with optical sensors, enabling them to detect material composition and color and thereby meet the requirements of closed-loop recyclers. For textiles where closed-loop recycling is not an option yet yet (currently the majority), they supply to open-loop recycling solutions (wiping cloths, nonwovens for insulation, and automotive). 

Recovery: A small remainder of garments that are contaminated or ineligible for reuse or recycling are disposed of in established waste facilities, prioritizing energy recovery whenever possible.

For spring/summer 2026, silk specialists Pongees is tipping fabrics in colours that are uplifting, yet down to earth, soft, but also invigorating, to sit alongside those with texture to reflect a new confidence among designers.

To add to its sustainable credentials, Pongees is also launching its first collection of Wild Silks, alongside tulles with low or zero formaldehyde.

Sandwashed versions of Pongees popular double crepe and habotai, as well as a crinkle georgette, have been added to the collection to extend its textured fabrics, which also include faille, tasar, mikado, zibeline, mohair and crepes. Discover the new Spring/Summer 2026 Collection by Paulo de Oliveira

Founded in 1936, in Covilhã, Portugal, Paulo de Oliveira, SA, is a leader in the production of elastic fabrics in Europe and exports most of its production to all continents. They are a vertical company producing from fiber to fabric, under the same roof, including the spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing for woven and knitting fabrics.

They are also a reference in sustainable production, with focus on sustainable raw materials produced in Europe with ecological processes, using recycled materials and renewable energy. Their manufacturing process is one of the most efficient in the world in terms of low carbon footprint. They keep on investing in the latest technology, being a state-of-the art unit for the production of wool fabrics and a reference company in the sector, globally.

PAULO DE OLIVEIRA group is composed of 3 textile companies: PAULO DE OLIVEIRA, PENTEADORA and TESSIMAX. The company has several certifications:

  • STeP Certification by Oeko-Tex; Amfori Certification BSCI; GRS – Global
  • Recycle Standard; RWS – Responsible Wool standard and Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
  • They are registered in the BCI (Better Cotton Iniciative) platform – They are not members but they can buy BCI cotton and pass the credits of this cotton to the clients who want BCI cotton;
  • They are registered in the ZDHC platform and they have the Supplier To Zero (Foundational Level) certification;
  • They are registered in the Higg Index platform and they have the certificate of completion of the self-assessment of the environmental module (not verified).

With sustainability and responsibility guiding their practices, as previously mentioned, several investments were made:

New Biomass Boiler, allowing a reduction of carbon emissions (more than 3500 Tons of CO2/year avoided, meaning a 75% reduction);

Over 1.6 million invested on photovoltaic panels, allowing a reduction of electricity consumption from the grid and consequent reduction of indirect CO2 emissions associated with the production of this electricity;

As for wastewater recover and reuse, more than 1.4 million were invested in a wastewater recovery plant. They have their own Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), since 2002 and 100% reuse of all incoming water, which is primarily used for cooling equipment.

“Their manufacturing process is one of the most efficient in the world in terms of low carbon footprint. They keep on investing in the latest technology, being a state-of-the art unit for the production of wool fabrics and a reference company in the sector, globally.”

They have undergoing an investment project to recover 65% of the treated effluent developed in the R&D Project jointly with University of Beira Interior, UBI. With this same institution (UBI), there’s a research project aiming the development of new effluent treatment processes for less pollutant load effluents. Adding to this, they proceeded with installing several flowmeters to improve the characterization and control of water consumption from different production processes. By implementing all of these measures, there was a drastic reduction of fresh water consumption and needs.

Because innovation is part of their DNA, new investments were made in spinning and weaving departments, in order to achieve even more sustainable products.

Now, regarding Paulo de Oliveira’s SS26 Collection, the focus remains on Sustainability, strengthening the Oliveira Green segment. Linen mixes, new designs, micro-designs and a variety of colors can be found, from pastel to the classics, we are bringing variety and innovation to the table, keeping up with the trends, with our high quality fabrics.

The MUNICH FABRIC START is about to start. How does it feel to get going again after the challenges of the last few years?

Sebastian Klinder: It feels good! The industry has been in a thoroughly challenging situation. After the last VIEW in June this year, there is a slight upward mood. And that is exactly what we noticed during the preparations for this trade show. There is a cautious spirit of optimism, which has a motivating effect. MUNICH FABRIC START offers the perfect framework for transforming this positive energy and putting it into practice.

Frank Junker: Absolutely. It’s also the right time for us to come together again. The MUNICH FABRIC START is more than just a trade show – it is a platform where ideas are born and new paths are taken. I firmly believe that we need more joy and fun in the industry again. This is also reflected in our September programme: it is varied, inspiring and full of new ideas.

This season’s theme is ‘INTUITION’. What does this theme mean for MUNICH FABRIC START and the industry as a whole?

Sebastian Klinder: ‘INTUITION’ is the central contemporary theme for us because it reflects the way in which we can react resiliently to the current challenges both in society as a whole and in the fashion industry. Our industry is still undergoing disruptive change and it is at times like these that it is particularly important to trust your intuition. The main theme aims to highlight human emotion as a source of creativity. We want to focus on the instincts that help us make the right decisions in uncertain times. This is also reflected in the trends for Autumn.Winter 25/26, which focus strongly on resilience, dreams and a return to the essentials.

Frank Junker: Exactly, and it’s explicitly not just about fashion, but about the entire environment in which we operate. ‘INTUITION’ means that we have the courage to rely on our inner voice instead of just relying on hard facts and data. MUNICH FABRIC START provides the space where creativity and intuition can go hand in hand to drive innovation. It is an invitation to our industry to embrace the unknown and break new ground by relying on what you feel deep inside.

This year’s motto at BLUEZONE is ‘DENIMINED’. What can visitors expect in this area?

Frank Junker: ‘DENIMINED’ is a neologism that reflects our deep commitment to denim. BLUEZONE has always been a place where tradition and innovation meet, and that will be the case again this time. Visitors can look forward to a wide-ranging programme, from new technologies in denim production to live design sessions. It’s about seeing denim not just as a fabric, but as part of a global culture that is constantly on the move.

Sebastian Klinder: Thanks to the runtime synchronisation of MUNICH FABRIC START and BLUEZONE, the two platforms will become an even more integrated ecosystem in which we can offer the denim community an even bigger stage. ‘DENIMINED’ brings together the A-Z of denim in the directly adjacent Zenith Area and showcases everything the industry has to offer. Whether sustainable production, innovative materials or creative designs – everyone will find something to inspire them here. The BLUEZONE is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the world of denim and experience the latest trends and developments up close.

MUNICH FABRIC START presents around 1,000 collections from international suppliers on around 40,000 square metres. Where do you see yourselves in this context and what are your next goals?

Sebastian Klinder: MUNICH FABRIC START has become one of the most important trade shows for the international fashion industry. But we prefer quality to quantity. We focus on gaining importance in different markets within Europe. Of course, the 40,000 square metres of exhibition space and around 1,000 collections show how diverse and dynamic our industry is. But above all, we are proud to once again make Munich the central venue for designers, product managers and the entire fashion industry. Numbers are not the ultimate measure for us – we are more interested in our show being a platform where not only business is done, but where trends are set and sustainable, value-adding and creative partnerships are established.

Frank Junker: In a nutshell, our show is where the industry comes together to shape the future of fashion. We offer different areas and themes that allow visitors to get informed and get inspired at the same time. It is this synthesis of diversity and structure that makes MUNICH FABRIC START so unique and a must for everyone in the fashion industry. And our goal is to continue to improve within these structures.

In addition to the hard business factors, the MFS always offers plenty of opportunities for networking and dialogue with industry experts. What can visitors expect?

Sebastian Klinder: This year we have put together a particularly rich programme of seminars and presentations. Topics range from sustainability best practice and supply chain challenges to internationally influential trend seminars – such as the Trendlectures by Li Edelkoort and Peclers Paris. As well as providing valuable insights, these events are a great opportunity to network with other industry experts and make new contacts. The legendary MUNIQUE Night Aftershow Party is one of the highlights, taking place as always on the evening of the first day of the show. Here, visitors can network in a relaxed atmosphere and gain new inspiration for their work through discussions.

We listen carefully to our exhibitors, partners and visitors and use our lean structures to act boldly and decisively. How is MUNICH FABRIC START positioning itself at a time when the requirements for trade shows that reflect global markets are becoming increasingly complex?

Sebastian Klinder: We have responded to the changing requirements by shortening the duration of the trade show to two days without compromising on quality and service. This enables our exhibitors and visitors to use their time efficiently and still make all the important contacts and gather information. Our platform is designed to be flexible and adaptable – this reliability is our key to success in an age where change is the only constant.

What is fashion? Fashion is creativity and expressing yourself. That’s beautiful and it gives every one of us a certain identity. It’s made out of fabrics, so to say “resources”. These resources are finite. However, 30% of overproduced clothes are being dumped every year, equating to roughly 5 million tonnes, or 12 kg per person in the EU. To put it in simple terms: This is not beautiful anymore…

To limit these effects and to promote recycling & repair systems, the European Commission has imposed the “Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation” (ESPR), which sprung to life on July 18, 2024. This isn’t just another piece of legislation. It’s a game-changer for the European market, aimed squarely at making sustainable products the new norm. Think of it as the EU’s bold stride towards a greener future, wrapped up in a robust action plan that redefines how products are designed, used, and recycled.

What’s the Buzz All About? Picture this: a regulation that goes beyond mere suggestions and instead puts firm rules into play. The ESPR replaces the older Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC and shakes things up by establishing ecodesign requirements that span almost all physical goods. From your favorite sneakers to that nifty new blender, everything is covered!

Digital Product Passport – Your Product’s New ID One of the standout features of the ESPR is the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Imagine a digital ID card for products that holds all the relevant details like where it’s from, what it’s made of, and its environmental footprint. This isn’t just a win for transparency; it’s a revolutionary way to keep tabs on sustainability and make sure products play by the green rules.

No More Wasted Potential Here’s a kicker: the ESPR puts an end to the eyebrow-raising practice of destroying unsold textiles and footwear. Now, brands will need to think twice before tossing unsold goods, thanks to a ban that could extend to other products too. And yes, they’ll have to spill the beans on how much they’re discarding every year. Talk about airing your dirty laundry!

Green Public Procurement: Spending Green to Go Green With public authorities in the EU shelling out a cool €1.8 trillion annually, the ESPR steers these funds towards more sustainable choices. This isn’t just about buying green; it’s about fostering a market where sustainable products are the stars of the show.

What’s Next? The rollout of the ESPR isn’t a sprint but a marathon. Starting with a prioritization exercise and moving through stakeholder consultations and detailed planning, each step is about getting it right—ensuring that every product hitting the market is stepping up its green game.

Momentum plays a crucial role by providing the technology to create and manage these digital passports for fashion brands & suppliers ensuring compliance and fostering circular product development. The EU DPP is basically “just” a digital tag that represents the origin & composition of fabrics, eco-footprint information, and repair, recycle, and disassembly options. This data needs to be collected somewhere. Otherwise, it cannot be analyzed and displayed in a validated way. Suppliers of brands are scattered all around the world and the communication takes mostly place through phone calls, Email contact, third parties, PLM systems, etc. Suppliers and brands need to speak the same language to not only comply with current and upcoming directives but also to upgrade their communication flow in a digitized and more efficient way. Momentum builds a self-enabling supplier network that collects ESG product data tied to the actual product. Depending on the data, we validate with twelve validation mechanisms to ensure the correctness of primary entries. In this way, we sensitize suppliers and reduce their operational overhead.

That’s the new beauty and future of fashion: self-expression through garments that are not only stylish but also sustainable. This shift towards accountability at every stage of production is set to transform the industry.

“BEL VESTIRE” dress well… Two words that inspired Canclini to create the Autumn.Winter 2025/26 collections of their brands, each one respecting its own original DNA. “Il Bel Vestire”: that’s the way they meant to express themselves about a new formal way, because men want to be well-dressed again. They want to feel elegant and refined, wearing quality clothes that give them a well-groomed appearance, which not only enhances their positive perception by others, but also their self-confidence and self-awareness.

Smart-formal will replace the smart-casual as seen in recent seasons. This “new formal” will take men’s wardrobe to a more elegant and refined level, without compromising on comfort and suitability. Hence the research for new fabrics, such as Dice to provide continuity to performance fabrics that allow the shirt to be reinterpreted in a new way.

CANCLINI

At this point, they think of a man who becomes a “collector”, searching for a new elegance through garments and fabrics such as Ten ten and Vis mel, which, thanks to the quality of the fabrics, last longer and therefore provides more sustainability. The wardrobe becomes a true collection, thanks to the different garments and variety of fabrics that it contains.

With their collections, Canclini wants to support precisely this type of man who loves the more formal part of their Grandi & Rubinelli range, with rigorous constructions in the richest blends such as Sea Island cotton and North Sea cashmere or Alasilk silk, but who also loves the innovation of new articles that he can find in Canclini1925: more particular and sometimes experimental or provocative fabrics, up to the most iconic ones such as Melton and its varieties. Skillfull their idea of using new blends such as Tencel or Micromodal to make the feel of the fabric even more fluid and distinctive.

The same man also likes the Blue1925 collection where he can take the opportunity to have different denims: from the more formal ones to those that allow him to show innovative and renewed shirts in different weights. And eco-sustainable fabrics.

We are happy to present you the Spring.Summer 23 trend themes included in our MUNICH FABRIC START Trend Book. We hope the themes will give you the impression of what the next season will bring and that they will inspire you and spark new ideas for your future collections’ development.

WILD.WIDE.WORLD is our 4th trend theme and frankly it tends to be slightly unexpected and a little wild… This is where minimalistic geometrical shapes are being overlaid with traditional patterns to create a cultural screenshot, and where artisanal and folkloric forces meet and race towards creativity.

Quotes from the most diverse cultures of the real and virtual worlds are uninhibitedly mixed and tested

Which colours are of highest importance?

Apparently deep aubergine, dark indigo, earthy browns and blacks root us deeply into our homeland. Warm reds and oranges in the matte brilliance of natural pigments are also added to the palette. Urban accents are included with shining sand and cooper tones. Black is a flexible base colour – either washed out or in True black.

SOUVENIR D’UN MOMENT is our second theme that is all about the search for happiness, joy and all the little things in life. This theme loves loose and relaxed, silky materials with hand-printed or regular prints and motifs. It definitely brings back this ‘Brigitte Bardot’ holiday vibe with a playful twist.

After a long period of disruption and restriction, we enter the trend themes of MUNICH FABRIC START for Spring.Summer 23 with a new feeling – in fact, a new definition – of individuality and community. We are looking towards a time that will redefine our perception on many levels. We are longing for a post-pandemic world where everything is “back to normal”, and at the same time, we realise this magic moment of resolution and healing will not suddenly arise. Instead, we are experiencing a process of redefining meaningfulness, happiness, sustainability and participation.

In search of optimism, a new balance and an individual self-image, we rediscover ourselves and others with an improved worldliness and tolerance. We feel a new kind of empathy and connection to the grand human and climatic issues. Fashion that is guided by social activism and that creates products with a purpose pushes us towards truemorrow – towards a more fulfilling future. We take a new course with our lives with the goal of doing more good.

Emotional healing through clothing – where science and textiles come together: The Healing Imprint explores the therapeutic potential of knitted garments. Bodysuits, gloves, socks and pillowcases are made to stimulate acupressure points on different parts of the body such as the hands, feet and head when moved. The custom-made textiles have grids through which small massage balls can be moved. By this, the acupressure points can be targeted.

Laura Deschl is not only the designer of these special textiles, but also has a background as a yoga teacher – she used her knowledge to develop a yoga-based movement practice that uses one’s own body weight to increase pressure on certain points of the body. According to Deschl, trauma can also be worked through with this method. In combination with a trauma-sensitive yoga practice, the clothing thus becomes an individual tool that can release and dissolve even deeper emotions. The Healing Imprint shows how the fields of science, economics, medicine, psychology and textile production can be harmonised in an interdisciplinary way.

Allowing and feeling emotions: Mental illness and trauma are often still a rather invisible topic in society. One of Laura Deschl’s major concerns is therefore to draw attention to issues surrounding mental health and the traces of trauma on the body and to destigmatise them. Deschl wants to help patients train their body awareness and in this way bring them closer to their body again.

“With The Healing Imprint garments, the acupressure aims to help the wearer access buried memories or emotions, while the trauma-sensitive yoga practice facilitates introspection around those recollections. Considering that our society has an intense history of war, severe traumatisation and high exposure to everyday postwar stressors were common. These memories can get stored in the body’s memory and even be passed on over generations. Emotional wellbeing and healing is thus another angle to look at sustainability. A balanced body and mind are more likely enabling to make decisions that are in alignment with other humans and the planet.”

“Sunkolor” by Panorama Fabrics – The Textile UV Indicator

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS Spring.Summer 23 #4

With climate change still gathering momentum, the intensity of the sun’s invisible UV rays is also increasing. The problem: the intensity is not visible to the eye. The result: sunburn and damage to our skin that sometimes only appears years later which makes it all the more important to protect our important organ.

Exactly this is possible with Sunkolor. The material helps to visually perceive sun exposure and to establish a healthy relationship with it as a result. The technology Panorama Fabrics, the material driven Design Studio from Berlin, manages to make UV rays visible. For this purpose, Sunkolor yarns, which are produced in Germany, are woven into textiles.

When exposed to sunlight, the colour of the material changes thus indicating the dangerous UV index range. The change of colour makes it immediately clear once the situation becomes critical. In the first step, the yarns will be attached in labels to hiking backpacks. In the long term, a variety of different or outdoor garments will be made from this yarn.

The vision:

Create new tools to adapt in a changing environment caused by climate change.

Panorama Fabrics studio aims to contribute with its own products and pioneering designs to highlight the possible interaction between textiles, humans and our climate. Research is being carried out on innovations to make more people aware of the effects of climate change and at the same time support them in dealing with it. The two founders, Gabriela Kapfer and Karina Wirth, share a fascination for different materials and a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration, which enables them to create something new and progressive together.
