When Weaving Becomes Computation Again

Explore these innovative projects at the Sustainable Innovations Forum in the Keyhouse in Hall 2

Threaded Protocols is not a textile innovation in the commercial sense, nor a digital tool disguised as craft. What makes the work distinct is its material investigation into how computational logic originates in textile practice and what is lost when those logics are abstracted into opaque technological systems.

Developed by artist and researcher Floor Berkhout, Threaded Protocols explores the structural relationship between weaving and computing. Both rely on binary decisions, pattern execution, and logical sequencing. Historically, the loom was the first computer. Threaded Protocols returns to this origin, using textile-making to expose the physical, gestural nature of computation that contemporary digital infrastructures have largely hidden.

Berkhout’s practice operates as a critical technical practice, working through craft methodologies to understand how protocols function materially. In Threaded Protocols, each crossing of threads becomes a binary operation: in front or behind, zero or one. Meaning emerges slowly, through repetition and attention, rather than speed or optimisation. This slowness is deliberate. It draws from perma-computing principles, which question the inevitability of fast, extractive technological progress and its influence on both digital systems and the textile industry.

The project also foregrounds the gendered history of both textile labour and computation, from 19th-century weaving rooms to the women who worked as “computers” in the mid-20th century. By re-embedding computation in the hands, Threaded Protocols seeks to reclaim agency that has been stripped away through industrialisation and black-box technologies.

Threaded Protocols is presented as process-driven research and interactive installation, not as a scalable product or material solution. Its relevance lies in how it reframes technology as something made, touched, and shaped by human choice, rather than an abstract, neutral system.

For designers, technologists, and researchers, Threaded Protocols offers a reminder that systems which appear precise and objective are always political, always designed, and always traceable back to material decisions. In a landscape dominated by efficiency, Berkhout’s work insists on another value: the right to build meaning slowly.

BIOTEXFUTURE: How to Make Textiles from Fossils

One of fashion’s biggest contradictions is that it relies on fossil fuels. Polyester, nylon, and acrylic make up most of the world’s fibres, which means that most clothes today start out as crude oil. adidas and RWTH Aachen University are leading the German project BIOTEXFUTURE, which wants to end that dependence.

The program is a group of businesses and universities working together to find scalable, bio-based alternatives. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Part of the SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS forum at Munich Fabric start, three main projects will be featured:

  • CircWool: a process that uses a solvent to restore wool fibres without lowering their quality.
  • BioPETex: a bio-based polyester that works just as well as regular PET.
  • BioCushion: a type of spacer fabric that can be recycled and used in shoes and clothes. It is both strong and circular.

These projects are not meant to be one-time tests; they are meant to be useful in the real world. Adding them to the forum ties speculative design ideas to a long history of applied science. It reminds us that we need both creativity and infrastructure to make the switch to sustainable textiles.

The message is clear for fashion and textiles: greenwashing can’t hide the fact that we depend on oil. We need to change the way things are built, and bio-based fibres are a big part of that. The good news is that the technology is available, partnerships are forming, and interest is growing.

At the upcoming MUNICH FABRIC START, LICA DESIGN STUDIO will present their material innovations for the Spring.Summer 26 season in the new Design Studios area on the first floor in S1 DS – E 02.

As we embrace Spring/Summer 2026, LICA’s new textile print collection reveals a compelling juxtaposition of themes that resonate with contemporary cultural narratives. This season invites a sense of escapism: just as LICA loves to hop into the charming  Citroen Dyane in order to head to the French west coast to unwind, our trend vision takes us to the horses of the Wild West or lets us retreat into our own dream worlds. Everyone finds different strategies to escape reality, reflecting our longing for distraction and introspection in these uncertain times.

This season invites a sense of escapism: just as LICA loves to hop into the charming Citroen Dyane in order to head to the French west coast to unwind, our trend vision takes us to the horses of the Wild West or lets us retreat into our own dream worlds.

Floral prints play a key role this season: From artisanal, abstract florals in a woodblock aesthetic that radiate simplicity (Nature Lines) to exotic patterns that transport us to lush landscapes (Good Trip), these prints express a yearning for good energy and joyful expression. In the Hothouse Florals trend you will definitely encounter vibrant, large-scale orchids or lilies, which may have both a painterly and a digital appearance. In the Soulful Garden, fresh millefleurs grow alongside arty pop flowers. The revival of vibrant 80s colors in fruity patterns adds a playful touch (Jellied).

Dark and intricate paisleys build on the floral trend while maintaining a dim and classy vibe. This Nu Boheme sparks the notion of recreation. Ultimately, it is Retro Riviera that unleashes a full-on vacation mood: glamorous Conversationals are linked to beach themes, and refined minimals come in fresh as well as sandy colors.

The prominent trends Grey Cowboy and Two Color Country suggest a bold country style that encompasses floral and decorative patterns, western motifs, two-tone paisleys, and ambitious Conversationals. The Wild Wild West fills this world with color.

In contrast to the energetic and bold trends, Enchanted reminds us of our resilience and the importance of calming retreats. Soothing watercolors blur the boundaries between dream world and daily life, allowing space for spiritual or cosmic ideas.

Natural resilience, gaining back power and emotional connection – welcome Autumn/Winter 2025!

At the upcoming MUNICH FABRIC START, BUNTASTIC will present their material innovations for the Autumn.Winter 25/26 season in the new Design Studios area in the rooms E 119 & F 111 on the first floor in S1 DS. 

Buntastic Design Studio has put together for us a “bowl” of fresh design ingredients for fall/winter 2025. New, innovative components in combination with comforting “dishes” serve us new, promising creations.

Natural resilience: Experiencing ourselves as part of nature and at the same time connecting deeply with our own “humanness”, creates resilience. Animal motifs reminiscent of tree bark, camouflage that transports us into moss-covered landscapes, offering a breath of fresh air, even in an office setting.

Regaining Power:  A.I. and the associated uncertainty leave us with conflicted feelings. Buntastic embraces this artificial influence by adding a “pinch” of innovation to our beloved designs to rejuvenate and empower.

Emotional Connection: In a world in which trends move ever faster, and are therefore in clear contradiction to sustainability, buntastic creates a counterbalance. Artistic intuition, which creates an emotion for the end consumer, is embedded in the zeitgeist and deliberately detached from micro-trends. “Sometimes a print is just right and becomes the next big hit – or even a trend,” says Tanja Neßler, art-director and owner.

Designer Joris de Groot often collaborates directly with factories, setting up his workplace within their grounds to get a deep understanding of their materials and innovate with their existing techniques. This allows him to blend traditional craftsmanship with industrial processes, resulting in unique and sustainable designs.

His project “2000N Pressed Shoe” (2018) emerged from his project “In4nite II” with Freudenberg, a company specializing in car interior materials. Joris explored the potential of Colback®, a material used in car upholstery, to create shoes. By understanding and experimenting with the molding process used in automotive interiors, he transformed Colback® into a fashion material. “2000N Pressed Shoe” is distinctive for its use of industrial techniques to create aesthetic details, showcasing the intricate patterns and textures that arise from this innovative process.

STUDIO JORIS DE GROOT

“Recycled Raincoat” (2021) is another collaboration between Joris and Dolfing Druten. Together, they tackled the issue of cutting waste from rain jacket production. By researching the shapes of leftover fabric pieces, Joris developed patterns that could be welded together to form new raincoats. This approach not only minimizes waste but also transforms discarded materials into valuable products, highlighting his innovative use of existing resources to create sustainable fashion.

For “Weld Bag” (2013), Joris partnered with Dolfing Druten, a manufacturer of work clothes and rain gear, to develop a collection of bags. He repurposed high-frequency welding techniques typically used for creating waterbeds and rainwear to design unique bag handles and shapes.

Studio Tjeerd Veenhoven (STV) is dedicated to material research and value chain design with a focus on sustainability. Graduating from the Art Academy in Arnhem in 2000, Tjeerd transitioned from product design to exploring sustainable value chains. Over the past 15 years, he has collaborated with numerous partners to create innovative solutions that address complex social issues related to sustainability. He acknowledges the urgent need for sustainable practices, particularly within the fashion industry.

Tjeerd’s “Mycelium 2D Printing” explores the potential of mycelium, a natural material obtained from mushrooms, which could be crucial for the transition towards more sustainable consumption. STV began researching mycelium four years ago, focusing on controlled growth without specific applications. Recently, they developed a printer that places inoculated substrates to cultivate mycelium into white dots, forming a graphical mycelium print. This speculative research envisions replacing PVC banners at cultural festivals with mycelium-printed canvas, which can be reused and reprinted without chemicals.

Another significant lead is the development of sustainable textiles from oyster mushroom mycelium. For three years, STV has investigated the potential applications of oyster mushroom waste, creating textiles from thinly sliced mushroom bases. His research revealed the mycelium’s capacity for continued growth from the mushroom foot after harvest. By allowing the material to grow back together in controlled conditions, a unique textile-like material is produced.

Designer Iris Veentjer, owner of Studio i Focus, is dedicated to innovative material research and experimental design to foster a regenerative world. Since 2018, she has created products raising awareness about environmental and social issues. The Netherlands faces significant soil subsidence and greenhouse gas emissions due to peatlands being drained for cattle grazing, which leads to plant decomposition and CO2 release. To address this, alternative agricultural methods like wetland cultivation are being explored.

A type of plant that thrives in wet conditions are cattails, the cultivation of which is currently not profitable for farmers, which is why its fibres are typically used for low-value products like insulation. Iris’s project, RietGoed, aims to develop high-quality textiles from cattails.

Iris developed a machine to mechanically extract fibers from cattails, allowing them to be processed like linen. This innovative approach can help reduce soil subsidence and emissions while creating a biocircular production process utilizing all parts of the plant.

With RietGoed, Iris aims to inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices and scale up textile production.

“Textiles made from cattails could potentially replace synthetic oil-based yarns. I aim to have the process from plant to fiber to product be fully biocircular. After multiple recyclings, textiles can return to the fields, contributing to peatland restoration,” she summarizes.

“RietGoed can be a solution to the nitrogen problem in peat meadow areas. By draining these areas, the soil sinks and nitrogen is released into the air. If we grow cattails on peat meadows in watery peat soil and make clothing from them, farmers will have the opportunity to earn money with this new crop.”  – Iris Veentjer

Due to the extensive use of harmful chemicals in the fashion industry, synthetic textile dyes are a significant threat to sustainability. They contribute to water pollution as dye residues enter factory wastewater and rivers and can even lead to serious health issues for people handling them. Additionally, synthetic dyeing processes require substantial use of water and energy. Ilse Kremer, the mastermind behind “Fabulous Fungi”, addresses these issues by utilizing fungi to create sustainable textile dyes. 

“Fabulous Fungi employs fungi in order to create sustainable and safe textile dye. Fungi use biochemical processes to produce pigments, making the impact different from fossil-based heat and extraction processes.”

This approach uses no harmful chemicals and requires much less water. The fungal pigments, which form the basis of these textile dyes, are biodegradable, ensuring that any remnants in wastewater do not pollute water sources. Furthermore, they are completely safe for both the workers handling them and consumers wearing the dyed garments, eliminating associated health risks.

Fungal dyes thus offer numerous advantages over synthetic dyes and other alternatives and present a promising solution to the environmental and health challenges posed by traditional textile dyeing methods.

Working towards a scalable solution for textile-to textile recycling: Introducing the T-REX Project

Today, only 2% of post-consumer textiles in the EU are diverted to fibre-to-fibre recycling. The T-REX (Textile Recycling Excellence) Project brings together 13 major players from the textile industry along with research institutions to create a harmonised EU blueprint for closed loop sorting, and recycling of household textile waste.

Drishti Masand, Senior Manager, Sustainability Direction – adidas

Across a three-year period, the EU-funded T-REX Project l is working to collect and sort household textile waste and demonstrate the full recycling process of polyester, polyamide 6, and cellulosic materials from textile waste into new garments.

“Circularity is a team sport, and we need to play together to win – this is the ethos of the circularity work at adidas. By bringing together major players across the whole value chain, the T-REX Project aims to demonstrate a new ecosystem approach, with harmonised methods and quality criteria.” – Drishti Masand

The project ultimately aims to develop systemic solutions to the problem of textile waste by identifying the infrastructure, technology, and policy needed to encourage the growth of circular value chains in the textile industry. At the same time, the consortium will also work on assessing how citizens can be empowered to actively contribute to the transition towards a circular textiles system.

BIOTEXFUTURE – Innovation Incubator

BIOTEXFUTURE is an innovation initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University and adidas AG. It aims to transform the textile industry from petroleum-based to bio-based materials, promoting sustainability and bioeconomy. By working with industry and research partners, BIOTEXFUTURE supports the development of bio-based textiles through various projects and innovation spaces. The initiative focuses on creating sustainable raw materials, advancing biopolymer technology, and facilitating a societal shift towards eco-friendly textile solutions.

The TransitionLab, led by the Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen University (ITA) in collaboration with adidas, focuses on the big picture: creating a sustainable, bio-based textile industry. This involves creating closed-loop systems where materials can be reused and recycled, reducing waste and promoting resource efficiency. One of the key goals is to enhance the environmental performance of textiles by developing bio-based materials that can be used in various applications, including technical textiles, automotive, clothing, and home textiles.

TRANSITION LAB

The LightLining project in collaboration with adidas aims to develop sustainable insulating textiles made entirely from aerogel fibers. At the heart of the project are cellulose aerogel textiles that, unlike traditional rigid aerogel products, are both flexible and highly insulating. These textiles combine the benefits of aerogels, such as lightweight and superior thermal insulation, with the flexibility and processability of conventional textiles. This innovative approach promises a cost-effective and scalable solution for energy-efficient applications​.

LIGHTLINING

FungalFibers is another collaborative project between the ITA and adidas, aiming to develop sustainable textile solutions using fungal-derived materials. This innovative project explores the use of fungal fibers as a renewable, bio-based alternative to traditional synthetic fibers in the textile industry. Fungal fibers offer several environmental benefits, such as biodegradability and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. The project focuses on optimizing the production process of fungal fibers to ensure they meet the performance standards required for various textile applications.

FUNGAL FIBERS

BioTurf is a sustainable, next-generation artificial turf made from bio-based polymers. Traditional hybrid grass, as used in international tournaments such as the 2024 European Football Championships, combines natural and synthetic fibers which is not environmentally sustainable due to intensive maintenance and difficult disposal. BioTurf can significantly reduce CO2 emissions and water pollution since it uses biodegradable fungal pigments for coloring and requires no harmful chemicals, making it an eco-friendly and durable alternative for sports fields. Thermobonding, the new method employed for the development of BioTurf, avoids energy-intensive latex backing, making it nearly fully recyclable. BioTurf not only meets FIFA standards but also supports the circular economy by using non-food agricultural waste to foster a more sustainable future for sports infrastructure.

Their latest innovation, DENIM HALO, represents a fresh approach to denim production, blending lower environmental impact with simplicity. By superficially dyeing the yarn, DENIM HALO achieves the desired aesthetic while drastically reducing the environmental footprint of denim finishing. New Print Design Collection by ANNANEMONE

At the upcoming MUNICH FABRIC START, ANNANEMONE will present their material innovations for the Autumn.Winter 25/26
season in the new Design Studios area in the room F 09 on the first floor in S1 DS. 

Unusual and visually striking hand painted patterns and illustrations often based on the natural world. The weird and wonderful. Pigeons and flies instead of cats and flamingos. Mushrooms with slugs on them because in nature mushrooms aren’t perfect and often have slugs on them. Anna of annanemone creates everything by hand through the use of gouache, linocut and drawing in her small Prague-based studio. She has a selection of prints for purchase and also creates bespoke custom designs.

Annanemone is a pattern design brand created by the Prague based illustrator Anna Šebestová. All of Anna’s designs are created by hand mostly through the use of gouache and her work is greatly influenced by her love of nature, animals and plants that are not often seen depicted on clothes and products. Anna has contacts among fabric suppliers and sewing studios as annanemone was a clothes brand for about 8 years. Now she focuses on custom designs for brands to have more time to be creative.

New Print Design Collection by LICA DESIGN STUDIO

At the upcoming MUNICH FABRIC START, LICA DESIGN STUDIO will present their material innovations for the Autumn.Winter 25/26 season in the new Design Studios area in the rooms E 119 & F 111 on the first floor in S1 DS. 

LICA Design Studio invites you to take a closer look at the textile trends which are the inspiring base for the new print collection AW 25/26.

Already from far the scarlet red will strike you. With the colour red one might associate power, wealth and glamour. And it is indeed glamorous when Juliette Binoche walks down the red carpet in her vibrant red gown by Dior at the Festival de Cannes in 2024.

And when she then handed over the honorary Palme d’Or to Meryl Streep, she gave a remarkable, emotional speech in honor of Meryl Streep’s achievements. Moreover, Binoche’s words transfer a strong, empowering energy to women in general. With the various use of the colour red in the new print collection LICA likes to put emphasis on this feminine energy, because we believe this is what the world needs right now.

The red colour palette is most present in the trend Phantasmagoria: The colour fills extravagant floral motifs and abstract organic forms. Sharp contours blur. It is a dark theme that also contains colours like dark blue, anthracite and pink.

In Dream Memories, the colours fade as if a misty veil was thrown over the prints. But next to the nostalgic appearance this trend proposes an edgy twist. The mainly floral patterns seem to be fluid and support the idea of blurred, peaceful memories.

While Dream Memories is a return to former (good) times, New Spheres imagines a new future! The complex trend joins worldly and otherworldly elements, explores crystals and cosmic constellations, and deals with a magical technology on the one hand and a distinct sensitivity on the other hand. The prints are full of contrasts, as they also combine dark and light colours, mainly black and white with strong accents of a cold blue.

The Mother Earth theme has a warm expression. Organic, irregular structures come in earthy tones and fiery colours calmed down by green and blue hues. A strong orange possesses a similar energy like the scarlet red of the Phantasmagoria trend. In the face of today’s world it seems inevitable to remember to worship the planet we live on and the nature we live from. In this trend we consciously assemble and mend earth fragments, imitate explosive patterns and revitalize soothing textures.

As the final act we like to present to you the Circus Act, since this theatrical trend is full of joy and lightness which we all might look for. The stories, that are told by the prints, transfer you to another world. They bring all kinds of animals in the most vibrant colours onto the stage and let acrobats swing through the air. We get lost in cheerful geometric patterns in orange, pink or blue colours.

We are presenting the most inspiring developments, prints and innovations in all our areas: FABRICS, ADDITIONALS, BLUEZONE, DESIGN STUDIOS, SOURCING & KEYHOUSE.

The Spring.Summer 23 collection of 6DIAS is divided in 3 themes: RETRO RESORT, GARDEN PARTY & NEO BOHEME. Enjoy new fabrics with fresh colors (like Lime, Mint and Brown), trendy prints and creative weavings. The fabric trading company highlights summer linens, poplins, viscoses, as well as sustainable fabrics, like organic and BCI cottons, recycled polyesters, Ecovero and Lenzing fabrics.
