We are going to present some of the most inspiring developments, prints and innovations in all our areas: FABRICS, ADDITIONALS, BLUEZONE, DESIGN STUDIOS, SOURCING & KEYHOUSE.
ADDITIONALS Spring.Summer 23: How do the labels, buttons, ribbons & Co. stand out this season?

A-TEX by Trimco Group
“SWAY” towards Sustainability
A-Tex’ latest collection is a pledge to conscious solutions for fashion brands. To facilitate recycling, the company which is part of Trimco Group has focused on single-material choices rather than material blends, multiple-use innovative packaging and minimisation of material waste. Split into Contemporary, Sport, Formal and Denim, the “SWAY” collection merges bold colours and fonts with cutting-edge materials, high design impact and low carbon footprint.

Nilorn Germany GmbH
For Spring.Summer 23, the focus is on labels and trims with a more biobased input. Nilorn introduces textile labels in TencelTM, organic cotton and linen and embroidered badges in viscose. There is also a high potential in the area of vegan leather alternatives – which is why Nilorn shows different options like cork with a fully biobased backing, Piñatex® apple-leather or FSC jacron.

UNION KNOPF
The Spring.Summer 23 collection is a response to global trends that herald a period of respite after the pandemic. The priority is sustainable development and respect for nature, hence the emphasis on natural and upcycling materials, from which buttons, press studs, stoppers, buckles and other environmentally friendly clothing accessories for women’s and men’s fashion were made.

ReSOURCE: The Denim Edit
The denim industry is taking innovative steps towards denim manufacturing that is cleaner, more respectful to our environment and that uses fewer resources. While each mill, launderer and denim service provider who exhibits at BLUEZONE are champions of sustainability in their own right, there is a growing ethos in the denim community and at our shows to support one another and grow towards a cleaner industry together.
Together with ReSOURCE, our online sourcing platform for sustainable materials, we are able to evaluate denim according to different sustainable criteria across the fiber, dyeing and finishing stages of denim production. Understanding how the material is made, under which conditions, from which materials and the production methods will go a long way to deciding which sustainable denim is relevant to you and your brand. Get to know the leading 3 material criteria you need to know about when it comes to sourcing sustainable denim:
Lyocell Tencel®
Lyocell is a manufacturing process of rayon which is much more eco-friendly than its relatives modal and viscose. Lyocell is made in a closed-loop system that recycles almost all of the chemicals used. Tencel® is made from eucalyptus from PEFC certified forests. Eucalyptus trees grow quickly without the use of pesticides, fertilizers or irrigation.
Look for denim which contain Tencel if you are interested in:
- Low water usage
- Using renewable resources
- Chemical control
- GMO free
- No soil erosion
- Biodegradable
Eco Stretch
Fiber innovations such as Creora, Eco Lycra and Roica EcoSmart Elastane provide a biodegradable alternative, however stretch denim is synonymous with synthetics and will typically contain a percentage of either polyester, nylon or elastane. Until recently it was not possible for a stretch denim to be 100% biodegradable but soon Canidani, will launch their latest Bio-Stretch fabric Covera™ at BLUEZONE on August 31st 2021.
Look for eco stretch denim if you are interested in:
- Reducing the time for the product to degrade
- Reduce the amount of synthetic fibers used in production
- Blending fibers to produce new qualities
Recycled Fibers
A lot of research is underway to making denim using post-consumer and post-production waste. Often, recycled fibers make up only a percentage of the overall composition of the final denim product. Typically the most popular recycled materials used in denim production include: cotton; polyester; post-consumer denim; post-consumer fibers; PET and nylon.
Look for denim which contains recycled fibers if you are interested in:
- Using waste materials
- Diverting waste from landfills
- Reducing waste
- Low water usage
- Low energy usage
- Blending fibers to produce new qualities

ReSOURCE: Sustainable Leather & Alternatives
Whatever has led you here, you are already thinking about the reasons a brand has for choosing between the seemingly massive range of leathers and leather alternatives available. This decision usually begins with a basic understanding of the manufacturing processes in order to decide, does the final material reflect brand values, share brand beliefs and share the same innovative approach? To help choose the best option for you, we provide material highlights from our recent showcase on ReSOURCE to directly connect you with industry partners who can support in your next steps.
There are over 50 kinds of sustainable textile and material certifications used across our materials showcased online and at our shows with ReSOURCE. Get to know which 4 you should be familiar with when it comes to sourcing sustainable leathers and leather alternative materials:
Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex
Specifically tailored to leather articles which have been tested for harmful substances. Certification can be awarded for leather semi-finished products, finished leather, leather fibre materials up to finished articles and accessories.
Look for Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex certified materials if you are interested in:
- using real leather materials
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- ensuring your products are harmless to health
Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex
All types of textiles that have been tested for harmful substances, from yarns to the finished product, may bear the STANDARD 100 product label.
Look for Oeko-Tex 100 certified materials if you are interested in:
- certified materials with an innovative approach
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- ensuring your products are harmless to health
V-Label by European Vegetarian Union (EVU)
The only requirement of this certificate is that the product is vegan/vegetarian, meaning the product must not contains products of animal origin; no animal auxiliaries may be used during the production process.
Look for V-Label certified materials:
- to ensure materials which are vegan, cruelty free and animal friendly
- to include in brand marketing, communication and raise brand awareness
- support the development of further innovative textile and accessories vegan alternatives
Cradle to Cradle by Cradle to Cradle (C2C)
Cradle to cradle (C2C) is an approach to a continuous and consistent recycling management. “Cradle-to-cradle products” are therefore those that can either be returned to biological cycles as biological nutrients or can be continuously kept in technical cycles as “technical nutrients”.
Look for Cradle to Cradle certified materials if you are interested in:
- ensuring production is focused on reducing water wastage and usage, fostering a closed loop system using wet processes
- materials which are committed to reducing their chemical use and using safer alternatives
- materials which use reduced energy in the supply chain, with use of renewable energy with minimal reliance on petro-chemicals
- materials which reduce and recycle waste throughout the textile supply chain
Other sustainable certifications to get to know when sourcing sustainable leathers & alternatives include: IVN Naturleder, Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) + Global Recycled Stand (GRS)

New Icon Guidance System to increase Transparency
Answering to the theme of innovation driven by THRIVABILITY, MUNICH FABRIC START has developed a new icon guidance system with which all material highlights presented in the trend forums are marked according to their sustainable as well as technical functions. In this way, trade fair visitors can quickly and clearly see what additional product features and functions the shown fabrics and ingredients have.
Each of the 44 icons indicates a specific characteristic related to the sustainability or performance of the respective product. With the help of these icons, manufacturers can highlight the added value of their products and at the same time make it easier for interested buyers to navigate through the increasingly vast range of products on offer.
“With our new icon guidance system, we are highlighting the interface between contemporary aesthetics and invisible but important advanced product features. In doing so, we see MUNICH FABRIC START neither as a certification body nor an audit agency – for the given classification, we rely on the information and honesty of the respective supplier of the corresponding samples. We are thus taking an important step towards information, transparency and responsible action in the interest of the industry.
Jo Baumgartner, Fabrics & Trends MUNICH FABRIC START
In this sense, all specific properties such as eco-labels, social standards, performance indicators, limit values, chemical ingredients, etc. must be verified again with the respective provider. In the trend forums at MUNICH FABRIC START, you will find the icon legend with the corresponding explanations and meanings behind all of the icons.
Weavabel Insist on Sustainable
Established over 30 years ago Weavabel provides Garment branding solutions, managing fashion brands trims from design to delivery in several regions across the globe. Over the years, their product range has expanded through innovations and latest technologies to help brands stand out in the market place. Their product range includes, labels, swing tickets, branded packaging, badges, metal trims, heat transfers, leather products and much more.
Especially over the last 3 years, Weavabel has heavily invested in developing sustainable materials for fashion branding to help brands meet their sustainable needs and goals. With sustainable sourcing, recycling and improved innovations in production methods they will launch their latest range with us at Munich Fabric Start!
Behind the Brand
When talking about sustainability, what images come to mind? Green, brown flecked effects, grainy feels? Our designers questioned, does this have to be? To support premium brands that want to make an impression with their trims yet meet the company’s sustainable goals we wanted to develop a premium sustainable product range to support this. So, we’ve moved through a journey with our eco ranges, initially producing very basic products to our latest range which includes techniques such and embossing, debossing and die cutting to give a premium finishes.
What’s in the range?
Bamboo paper and tape– Bamboo is both a sustainable and renewable alternative for making paper. As compared with traditional wood sources, bamboo is ready for harvest after 2 to 3 years while traditional wood materials take 5 to 8 years and doesn’t require replanting after harvesting.
Stone paper – Stone paper is made from crushed stone waste rather than from wood-pulp. Water is not used in the production and to produce the paper only takes 15% of the energy standard paper uses and only 67% less CO2 is released during production. The paper is totally waterproof and fluid resistant and it’s durable and can withstand water, grease and dirt.
FSC paper – FSC certified paper allows traceability and ensures the highest environmental and social standards are met in the paper.
Biodegradable seal – Seals made from D2W substances which break-down over time, this normally is between 2 – 5 years and these only biodegrade when put in landfill with active microorganism environment.
Recycled polyester tape and labels – Tape produced using post-consumer recycled yarns reducing landfill.
Organic cotton labels – 100% Organic Cotton Labels produced using GOTS certified materials. Organic cotton is grown organically in subtropical countries from non-genetically modified plants, and without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers or pesticides.
Fully recyclable seal – Metal and paper seal with logo printed in bamboo paper & natural twisted paper for string. This is fully recyclable.
